1. When is the first time you realized you were an artist? For me , it has been more of a gradual incremental process of elimination , where I realised I didn't like working 9 to 5 , I had to be my own boss , I was unable to wear a suit for long periods of time , & I valued my time more than money ...
2. When someone is viewing your work for the first time, what do you hope they’ll
see in it? Or, what do you want them to say about your work? I hope that my work evokes three main possibilities , which are , an understanding of the work in & of itself , a touching or glancing onto the viewer's own amalgam of life , & a didactic or teaching aspect which moves the viewer forward into a new perspective ...
3. Who are some artists that you admire and why? What is it, specifically, about
their work that draws you to it? In no particular order , Seurat , Picasso , Rothko , Letendre , Eloul , Odjig , Bornefeld , Twombly , Miro, Vasarely, Lismer, Moore, Harris, ...my husband Joseph Grove ... I like work that thinks before it speaks ...
4. What is it like to be an artist in your community? The same as it is anywhere else , hard ...
5. If you could take a fantasy artist vacation anywhere in the world, where would it
be? Your goal would be to soak in art history or to make your own art. Where
would you go? I am right there ... Canada is one of the wildest , most unexplored countries in the world ...The possibilities here are almost endless since the boundaries have not been defined as of yet...
6. How do you promote your art? First , by doing the best possible works that I can muster ... good work always gets good word of mouth ...
7. Why are you drawn to the media that you use? Oil paint is thick & gooey & smells nice , reminds me of peanut butter sandwiches... or jello pudding ...I love mush ...
8. I’ve noticed that [these subjects, colors, themes] appear often in your work. What
attracts you to them? I love nature , the colour blue & spontaneity ...But I do try very hard to use colours like orange which are more difficult aesthetically , sometimes depicting beautiful machines which are almost organic , & longer term issues which are less attention grabbing...
9. Tell me about the classes that you teach and your interaction with students. Um , I only teach once in a blue moon , if I feel the student needs to know who they are , especially if they are already gifted but aren't aware & may end up in the wrong field... I feel that my work is always teaching by example , & literally offering classes is not necessary for me if my work speaks loudly enough...
10. How has technology helped you market your work? Well , the distance provided by viewing my paintings on the internet gives me tremendous self-confidence & has helped me to see the forest for the trees, which clarifies my own intent artistically ... & the better I think I am , the better I can market my own work ...
